Vision
Knowledge Through Inquiry

Mission
Providing every Innovian an opportunity to inquire and construct Science knowledge through interaction with the environment.

Our Beliefs
In order to develop competencies in the area of Science inquiry, our teachers must ensure every Innovian:

  • has a deep foundation of  Science factual knowledge
  • understands facts and ideas in a contextual framework  and
  • organizes knowledge independently  in ways that facilitate retrieval and application

Our Pedagogical Innovation
Using Nature as a platform to develop our pupil’s fundamental Science knowledge and competencies that complements the learning of physical science.

Our Goals

Academic Excellence  in Science

  • Quality of Assessment
  • Differentiated Learning Experiences for pupils
  • Interdisciplinary & Inquiry based learning
  • Quality Teachers’ Professional Development

Accelerate effective teaching and learning processes in Science using ICT tools

  • Innovative teaching with new media

Partnering with stakeholders  and community to enhance Science Learning Experiences

  • Tapping on expertise of various stakeholders to enhance Science Learning experiences

Quality Learner Centered Environment

  • Develop physical infrastructure to promote learning of Science through nature

An Environment- Friendly School

  • Support the Green Movement

Our Action Plans

Quality of  Assessment

  • Multi modes of assessment including  CAs, SAs, Science Practical and use of Science Portfolio

Differentiated  Learning Experiences

  • S-Cube Science-Stellar Integration  Igniting curiosity of Lower Primary  Pupils
  • Green Thumbz – Process Skills through interaction with nature
  • Young Inquirer – Enrichment Workshops

Teachers’ Professional Development

  • Customised Planned Training through Learning Needs Analysis

ICT driven pedagogy

  • eDucation : iMindmap

Inquiry and Investigative learning experiences

  • Data Loggers
  • Use of NXT LEGO and eLabs for exploration

“Beyond the Classroom” experiences

  • Science Anytime Anywhere
  • Wikis and Blogs to facilitate forum discussions between teachers and pupils

Partnership through Helping Hands

Parent Volunteers involvement in Science related activities:

Lab Aides

  • Training of Parent Volunteers as Lab Assistants to facilitate conducting of experiments during curriculum time.

Science Outreach

  • Active Collaboration with external agencies and communities to promote Science learning

Excellent Learning Infrastructure

The Flora and The Fauna

  • Learning Laboratories  for Physical  and Life Sciences

Explorama

  • Science Corners for exploration of ideas

Nature and Me

  • Eco garden  to support inquiry into Earth Science and Botany

Environmental Awareness

Young Environmentalist

  • Grooming of student leaders to champion the green movement efforts in school

Green Mile

  • Economic drive programme (ED) that advocates Reuse, Reduce and Recycle effort
  • Innova Recycling Programme, click here for more details.

Use of iMindmap in Science Learning

P4 and P5 pupils utilize mindmapping software “iMindmap” to map out fundamental Science concepts and make across topic connections. These pupils have proceeded from pen and paper exercises to using  IT to incorporate information from both group and individual web quests.  Such directed learning further strengthen our belief that pupils should organizes knowledge independently  in ways that facilitate retrieval and application.
Learning Journeys and  Science Activities

Term 1

  • Science Trail at Bukit Chandu
  • Young Arborist (Singapore Botanical Gardens)

Term 2

  • Datalogger Training (Pupils and Teachers)
  • Science Centre Laboratory Session

Term 3

  • Learning journey to Frog Farm

Young Arborist

Collaborating with a group of NIE GESL students, our young Innovians  participated in  a ‘hands-on’ programme at the Botanical Garden The pupils learnt to recognize some common wayside trees and also had the opportunity to identify some Heritage Trees and learn to appreciate the mystery and beauty of these old trees.

Learning Trail to Bukit Chandu

Integrating Science and National Education , our pupils embarked on an Integrated Learning Trail to Bukit Chandu in the week commemorating Total Defence Day 2009. Bukit Chandu provided the pupils with an experiential outdoor learning opportunity through their interaction with nature and historical artifacts.

Datalogger Training

The use of ICT tool like data loggers allows our pupils to be actively engaged in investigative lessons to independently construct understanding of Science concepts and develop scientific  process skills.

Mangrove Galore and I-Star Butterfly Garden

The Mangrove Learning Area and the I-Star Butterfly Garden provide enriched learning  spaces for our pupils  to enthuse them and make learning interesting.  Our focus is to extend the learning process of our pupil beyond the classroom and instill in them how Science is prevalent in their natural surrounding  and  can applied in different aspects of their lives. Activities with link to the science curriculum support learning in both areas.

SYSF Stage! 2009

The Shell Singapore Youth Science Festival is a national annual event jointly organised by the Science Centre Singapore, the Science Teachers’ Association of Singapore and the Shell Companies in Singapore. Since 2007, an exciting competition called SYSF Stage! has been organised, for primary level students. This year, the theme is ‘Space – What’s up There?’ Innova Primary was represented by a team of 10 pupils who put up a 7-minute skit on the theme of Space in accordance with 2009 being “International Year of Astronomy”.

Starry Starry Night

Innova Primary organized a night sky observation session, “Starry Starry Night “on 29th May 2009 in support of Science Centre Singapore’s Shell Astro Challenge 2009. Our pupils and their families had the opportunity to use telescopes and long range binoculars to catch a glimpse of the moon, Saturn and learn more about the constellations. A range of fringe activities was also organized including talks on astronomy, outdoor movie screenings, displays of pupils’ work and some family based activities. The success of the event is a testimony of our commitment in working closely and collaborating with our stakeholders and partners to provide a quality learning environment.
